In earthly poetry, the lights are often a metaphor of hope. The fires burned out in silence, only for people to see the path ahead in the darkness before dawn.
That said, neither the first Torchforger, nor the friend with whom he painted the Elysium as a child, ever knew where the lit path led until the moment the lights went out.
