In Snezhnaya, the name "Alyosha" is exceptionally favored among the people. This is not because some young hunter's monumental deeds made it a household name, but because the name itself carries a beautiful promise that countless parents yearned for. Fearless, innocent and kind-hearted... They pray for their children to bear such virtues, wishing for them to escape the carving of fate just like the heroes in legendary tales. Yet, they are oblivious to the harsh truth: the ice and snow of Snezhnaya never respond to prayers, and the bitter cold itself is a relentless rasp. A mere name cannot breed true courage, and unarmed kindness cannot shield a child from the spear thrown by fate. Only those who experience, fight, and live like heroes can break the curse of reality; only those who plunge their feet into the frozen wastes time and again stand a chance at capturing hope. Of course, no one had ever explained such wisdom to Alyosha, nor did he have the time to dwell on these things. He only knew that to keep his people fed and sheltered, he had to venture deeper into the snowfields, bring back more game, and, with Tugarin by his side, tread out a deeper, wider path into the unknown wilds. As for complex calculations, leave those for the "realists" to weigh; as for profound philosophies, leave them for the "idealists" to debate. As a hunter tracking through the bitter frost, he only knew how to polish his bolt and pull the trigger. Yet, those who knew him well would say: "He is a fine lad — fearless, innocent and kind-hearted, just like Alyosha in countless folktales..." And the howling wind would offer this prayer: "May the Kresnik's Torch burn as fiercely as his soul."
